I suppose from time to time I must go against my dispositions, or perhaps my inclinations and ‘toot my horn’ a little. I am amazed that without any promotion, not even a little, I have recently managed to get over the 10,000 mark on downloads. This includes my 4 previous albums on streaming services like Spotify and YouTube and ‘reels’ on Facebook and Instagram. In the scheme of things this is barely a blip in the music world. But in my humble world… it is a satisfying milestone. I no longer keep track, but songs have been downloaded from at least 28 countries. I am humbled and grateful for those who have downloaded and listened to one of my songs. Especially those who have never met me.
I have spent over a year writing and recording these 9 songs. Most were recorded at Studio B (also known as the second bedroom in our condo on the 7th floor overlooking Chiang Mai, Thailand). Bass guitar tracks were recorded at Offseason Studio near Seattle by the very talented Sean Thompson. When Diane and I left Seattle in November ’23 for our retirement odyssey, I had more recording gear checked at the airport than clothing. When deciding between socks and my Rode N-1 vocal mic, the answer is that I haven’t worn socks in almost 2 years.
I have what is called a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). It’s pretty much software on my laptop with equipment allowing me to plug in and record guitars, mics, and keyboards. The recording world moved to digital recording by the late 80’s. It is amazing to me that I can do most of the things a major recording studio can do but I can do it dressed in comfy clothes on my own schedule. Billie Eilish (9-time Grammy winner) and her brother Finneas are a success story when it comes to home recording. I suspect their first few albums had recording equipment similar to what I currently use.
Who is Sounds Like Water? Sean Thompson plays bass guitar and has been instrumental in shaping my recording skills. His input has had great impact on how I go about writing, playing and recording music. Diane Carrasca plays all the pianos and has improved every aspect of my musicality, from vocal skills to knowledge of music. And then, there is me. I write the songs, I sing, play guitars, play synths and program drums. We are a team. ‘SLW’ simply does not occur without everyone.
Getting into the weeds with Bill about music...
There is a wide spectrum of thoughts and attitudes on music in the world. They range from ‘I don’t really listen to music” to ‘I’m on top of the music industry and can recite lyrics from Led Zepplin to Taylor Swift” and everything in-between. Music is all around us. It is a part of our life. Even if you don’t listen to music during the light of day you still are moved by it in movies. It is a part of the story as much as the words spoken by the actors. The people who write the movie scores we enjoy are the modern-day equivalent to Mozart or Beethoven.
The music industry evolves. But no more so than it has done in the last decade or more. In general, for the listener, it has never been better. For years the music industry, radio stations, and such have given the public a finite list of songs in specific genres; Rock and Country. Now everyone has a ‘radio station’ at home on their Spotify and YouTube setlists. If anything, there is almost too much music, if that is even possible.
Last year, Spotify let me know that in 2024 I listened to 824 ‘different’ musical groups from around the world in many different genres. That’s one year. In the 3 years of high school, I listened to 17 different bands. Ya know, Boston, Van Halen, AC/DC, Styx, Rush, and 12 others 🙂
Outro (the opposite of intro...)
Next month we’ll get back to our regularly scheduled programming. Diane I and will soon be headed to the island of Phuket for some well-deserved beach time and hopefully will have a little video. We’ve rented a private speed boat for the day, just the two of us, along with crew, and guide to get us around.
For the remainder of the year, we do have plans for two more trips to somewhere requiring a trip through customs and immigration. Yeah, I know, a little mysterious. No flights booked yet, but I suspect we will follow through.
P.S. What is up with the Bird on the album cover?
Every Sunday when Diane is at the Cathedral either playing piano or singing in the choir, I go to Wat Chia Mongkhon. I sit under a sala (a building without walls with tables and chairs set up inside) and watch the Ping River drift by. I spend most of my time writing in my notebook and having a coffee. Since this is a wat, Buddhists regularly feed the fish of the river to earn merit or sometimes purchase birds in cages to set free for the same reason. Normally they just open the cage door and away the bird flies. But this one particular bird just sat there in the cage and then was just dumped out on the dock. The bird seemed dazed and wasn’t doing well, maybe even injured. They carried the poor bird to the end of the dock and hoped for the best. I was thinking the worst and was worried. After a half hour or so people seemed to lose interest, but I was riveted. Some kids started playing on the dock unaware of the bird just sitting there. I was sure it was going to get stepped on and I’d have bad bird dreams for years to come. The bird walked to the edge of the dock, and it looked like he was contemplating jumping in the water. Can you imagine? I was about to witness a bird suicide. All I could do was just watch. My stomach tightened from the trepidation. My heart was in my throat. Then suddenly he just flew away. I was SOOOO relieved. I ended up writing about it in lyric form and the song ‘Bird’ ended up as the title cut on the album. I sent this story to Athina Efthymiopoulou, an artist in Greece I hired to do the artwork, and she completely understood the story and conveyed it beautifully. I just love the album cover.
For context, these photos were shot the following week. The bird pictured is a lot larger than the one in the story. It was more of a sparrow.
Every Sunday, the sala where I perch…
